Welcome
Hello, and Welcome to my home on the Internet — my Family Truckster on the Information Superhighway.
If we haven’t met yet, I’m a big fan of great journalism and writing, graphic novels, foreign or 80s movies and old theatres, discovering new foods with friends, deep sea fishing, blues and alt-country music, outdoor ice hockey, social enterprise ventures like Kiva, dogs AND cats, physics and science, the study of history, my big family, my alma mater (Go Eagles!), and a few New York sports teams from my childhood (Mets, Giants, Rangers). I spent 11 years in Boston and I am now in the process of settling in Washington, D.C. — if you’re in the area, I’m always looking for restaurant suggestions, especially New Orleans cuisine!
Beyond that, I spent three years at Harvard, where I was responsible for the financial and administrative operations for two experimental quantum physics groups. While there, I handled everything from their multi-million dollar grant portfolios to their weekly coffee bean deliveries and most things in between. In 2008, I returned to Boston College full-time to complete my BA in History, graduating in May 2009.
For those of you who DO know me, you probably know I used to keep a blog on this site, documenting my search for a viable career path in the news-media industry — towards a subsequent *job* in journalism. That blog was fun and I’ve kept some posts from it, which I’ll post later, but I also discovered a few things along the way.
First off, as a current job-seeker, it’s not the wisest job search tactic to critique various organizations or models. Second, I realized that there are plenty of people out there — industry professionals, consultants, J-school professors, even media moguls — who have a significant business interest in finding a viable career path/business model for journalism. I was more or less giving away my research for free. So I decided to table the blog for now.
It is 2010, however, and I *am* still job-hunting, so I’ve decided to keep this site up as a virtual business card, and proof of my modest digital savvy.
If you’re in the news/media business, I have PA experience from ABC News, have directed a studio TV production, know my way around audio/video editing software, and most content management platforms. I’m on the usual social media sites and have studied various metrics or analytics, but have learned enough to keep my own footprint private.
Right now, I am searching for another exceptional organization to support, where I can continue my professional and intellectual development. Feel free to contact me if you have any job leads or want to discuss any of the above.
My best,
James
